Apple Varieties available for Winter CSA & Monthly Apple Delivery

available apple varieties as of 2/25/2013

Fuji

Appearance:  Red with a yellow background color, slightly lopsided (because of its York parentage) with small russets (textured spots).
Flavor Profile:  Extremely sweet and firm. 
Uses:  Our best storage apple of our sweet varieties.  A favorite apple for eating fresh. 
Who’s Favorite:  Mary Margaret

 

Pink Lady
Pink LadyAppearance:  Vibrant pink skin with white flesh. 

Flavor Profile:  Tart and sweet flavor with a champagne fizz.  Very crisp. 
Uses:  An excellent storage apple.  Enjoy eating Pink Lady fresh out of hand.  When baked, Pink Lady will soften, but will keep its shape.

GoldRush
GoldRushAppearance:  Yellow apple with orange blush.  Russets (textured spots) decorate the skin. 

Flavor Profile:  Firm, juicy, and tart, some say it has a winey flavor. 
Uses:  Excellent storage apple.  Best eaten fresh, but cooks nicely too.
Who’s Favorite:  Sidney

 

York
YorkAppearance:  Red skinned with lopsided/ “parallelogram” shape

Flavor Profile:  Tart and firm, with a good old fashioned flavor.
Uses:  Excellent for baking as it will keep its shape.  Stores well.


 

Stayman
StaymanAppearance:  Dark red skin, large sized apple, white flesh.

Flavor Profile:  Firm and juicy with a mildly tart and rich flavor. 
Uses:  Great all-purpose apple:  eaten fresh or used for pies, sauce, baked, etc.  Has a long storage life. 
Who’s Favorite:  Sandy

 

Braeburn
Appearance:  Yellow skinned apple with a pinkish-red blush and russeted (textured spots).

Flavor Profile:  Mildly tart, juicy, crisp, and very firm. 
Uses:  Good all-purpose apple:  eaten fresh, pies, sauce, baked.  Stores well.
Who’s Favorite:  Dave

 

Gala

GalaAppearance:  Yellow background color with a light red stripped blush. Flavor Profile:  Very sweet and flavorful.
Uses:  Best eaten fresh out of hand or in salads.
Who’s Favorite:  Kids!  Gala tend to be on the small side and they are perfect for the lunch box.  You’ll be sure that not much apple will be wasted since they are the perfect size and quickly/easily consumed.
